The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Education and Skills and managed by the Council. In 2018, we invested in a total of 1,193 postgraduate scholars, with over 5,000 individual scholarships for excellent research awarded to date.
The Department's student finance team ensures that the Departments various policies around student finance are implemented. This involves drafting the annual legislation, which underpins the award of student finance to Northern Ireland students and working with delivery partners such as the Student Loans company and Education Authority.
Higher Education provision is decided by the individual parliaments in Scotland and Northern Ireland. At this stage the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Northern Ireland have not launched a doctoral loan. Therefore UK nationals, or individuals with settled status in the UK, ordinarily resident in Scotland and Northern Ireland will not.

Loans are repaid in the same way as other UK Government student loans through salary payments after the student has completed the course. PhD Studentships. These scholarships are available for undergraduate or postgraduate study but preference is given to applicants wishing to study for a research degree, or who are applying for a master's degree with a view to progressing to research at a later date. Details of doctoral loans for students from Northern Ireland and Scotland haven't been confirmed yet, but there are plans to create similar schemes. EU students may be eligible if they are living in England or Wales on the first day of their course and have lived in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the past 3 years.
Postgraduate loans. A Postgraduate Master’s Loan can help with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate master’s course. Funding for postgraduate loans is different if you normally live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The PhD loans work in the same way as the postgraduate loans outlined above. It's important to be aware that it won't cover the costs of both tuition fees and living expenses, so you'll need additional funding to cover those costs.
