An M.A. degree with a major in art history is usually required for admission to the Ph.D. program. If the student has a Master's degree in an area other than art history, or if there is a question concerning the applicant's ability to pursue a doctoral program in art history, additional courses may be required.

The Department of History of Art has expertise and welcomes candidates in many areas of history of art and architectural research, but is unable to offer places to candidates for whom no supervisor is.
