The purpose of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biblical Studies with degree concentrations in the Old Testament or the New Testament is to equip students for academic teaching, research, and for producing scholarly, creative writing in the fields of Old Testament and New Testament.

Whether you want to sharpen your Hebrew, focus on a genre of the Old Testament or explore contemporary issues in Old Testament theology, the Ph.D. in Old Testament will give you that opportunity. This degree allows students to specialize in either the language, literature or theology of the Old Testament.

In addition to the stated purpose of the PhD program at SEBTS, the purpose of the PhD in Old Testament is to prepare students who (1) desire to teach Old Testament or a related discipline in colleges and seminaries; (2) desire to minister as pastor-theologians in local churches; (3) desire to use their knowledge of Old Testament Studies in their ministries in global mission contexts.

The PhD (Theological Studies) program is designed on a four and a half year, full-time model, consisting of at least two and a half years of course work followed by an additional two years of comprehensive exams and dissertation research and writing. The program may be completed in four years if the student has exceptional biblical and modern.

The Doctor of Theology in Old Testament focuses upon the History of the Jewish Monarchy. The Th.D. (Old Testament) program is a 60 semester hour program that is designed to be completed in approximately 4 years. Extensive translation of the Old Testament Historical Books is required, with the student translating all of 1 Samuel through 2 Kings.

Dr. VanGemeren taught at Geneva College and Reformed Theological Seminary for eighteen years before coming to Trinity. His areas of expertise include Old Testament theology, poetical and prophetical books, and the books of Psalms, Proverbs, and Isaiah. Andrew E. Hill is professor of Old Testament studies at Wheaton College in Illinois. He is the coauthor with John Walton of A Survey of the Old Testament and the author of Malachi in the Anchor Bible commentary series. His articles have appeared in such scholarly publications as Hebrew Annual Review, Journal of Biblical Literature, and Vetus Testamentum.
