Creating independent scientists and critical thinkers is one of the goals of the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PhD Thesis) program.The Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Master's program provides students with a strong foundation for doctoral studies while opening many research-oriented career options. Faculty research ranges from lung infections in cystic fibrosis and systemic infections such as sepsis to molecular diagnostics and therapeutics and vaccine development.Oxford's contribution to infectious disease has been enormous. Penicillin and the related cephalosporin antibiotics were discovered and developed here. More recently Oxford has played a key role in the introduction of artemisinin-related drugs for malaria and in the development of new vaccines for bacterial meningitis and Ebola.
The Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (IDM) is committed to training the next generation of scientists and public health professionals to enhance the control of infectious diseases in the human population.The Microbiology Graduate Program at the University of Colorado is a Ph.D. program preparing students for careers in research and teaching in the molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases in both microbiology and virology. Close individual attention is given by the faculty to the needs and training of each graduate student.
The goals of doctoral training with a concentration in EMD are to provide a current theoretical and practical base of epidemiological and microbiological principles, to master research methods, and to apply these skills to investigations of the biology of infectious organisms of public health importance and the epidemiology of the diseases they cause.
